Indiana Jones and the Dance of Aldebaran, Part 3 (conclusion)

CUT TO:  Indy hurrying down the stairs to the first floor and meeting Angela and Vivian at the bottom.

                                         INDIANA JONES

Vivian, I must find Bryant.  Do you know where he is?

                                         VIVIAN

I believe he is still in the parlor.

                                          ANGELA

Indy, did you meet with the High Lama?

                                         INDIANA JONES

There isn’t time now, Angela.  See if you can locate Shorty and send him to the parlor.  I must see Bryant.

Indy leaves the foyer and heads into the parlor.  CUT TO:  Bryant in the parlor reading by the fire, Indy enters.

                                         INDIANA JONES

Bryant!  You told me about some equipment you had brought in, where is it stored?

                                         BRYANT

Got a project dreamed up all ready, have you?

                                         INDIANA JONES

Boy, I’ll say.

CUT TO:  Indy leaving the parlor and meeting Shorty in the foyer.

                                         INDIANA JONES

Shorty, where’s Bogart and Gable?

                                         SHORT ROUND

They’re still with the dog.  Angela only called for me, should I go and get them?

                                         INDIANA JONES

There isn’t enough time!  You’d better come with me now.

CUT TO:  A storage facility away from the monastery.  Indy forces the door open and raises a lantern.  There are the tools and supplies Bryant had spoken of earlier.  CUT TO:  Shueller wandering into the parlor and finding Bryant still there, appearing somewhat pleased with himself.

                                         SHUELLER

Must be a good book, you seem to be enjoying it immensely.

                                         BRYANT

Naw… read it a dozen times all ready.

                                         SHUELLER

Then what’s with the shit eatin’ grin?

                                         BRYANT

Oh… I think I just inspired someone.

                                         SHUELLER

And who might that be?

                                         BRYANT

Indy… he just came in all excited a few minutes ago and wanted to know where some excavating equipment was.  I think he has a project brewing… thanks to me.

                                         SHUELLER

Excavating equipment…  for what?

                                         BRYANT

Oh… a plumbing project I dreamed up a while back.  I had the porters bring it all in, you know.  (he ponders the same information he had given Indy earlier)  Do you realize the people in the valley still tote their water?  Well, my plan would have changed all of that… had enough dynamite to get me through the rock…

Shueller doesn’t stay to hear the rest, hurriedly he exits.

                                         BRYANT (calling after him)

Might have a job for you, too… if you’re interested.

CUT TO:  THE GAME ROOM.  Kleinschmit and the other Germans are entertaining themselves when Shueller comes in.  He separates them from Kleinschmit and begins talking but they appear reluctant to listen to him.  Kleinschmit maneuvers to get close enough to over hear.  Frustrated, Shueller leaves the game room alone.  CUT TO:  Shueller storms into his room knocking items out of his way as he hurries to his bed and pulls his revolver out from under the pillow.

FADE

EXTERIOR.  THE GRAND PROMENADE.  DAY.  Indy and Shorty have packed some of the equipment on their backs and are leaving the monastery, heading up towards the crag’s entrance.  Angela meets Indy by the fountain.

                                         ANGELA

Indy, what are you going to do?

Indy directs Shorty to continue his ascent.

                                         INDIANA JONES

I don’t have time to explain now, Angela.  Stromberg and Von Haus could be closing in on this place as we speak.  I’ve got to try to stop them from ever finding the crag’s entrance.

Conway, Sondra and Chang come out of the monasteries entrance and stop at the head of the stairs, Bryant and Vivian are not too far behind them.  Alex and Quie come out from the hanging gardens.  Indy turns to address all of them.

                                         INDIANA JONES

You have a way of life here that mankind has always dreamed of and hoped for.  (he looks at Angela)  Don’t change any of it.

Kleinschmit and the other soldiers come out from the foyer and watch along with the others as Indy kisses Angela then runs to catch up with Shorty, who is halfway up the ascent.  Kleinschmit approaches Bryant.

                                         KLEINSCHMIT

What is happening?

                                         BRYANT

I think Indy is going to try to seal off the entrance.

Kleinschmit looks off to where Indy and Shorty are and smiles.  CUT TO:  Shueller coming out of his room with his revolver in hand.  Bogart and Gable meet him in the corridor and Shueller holds them at bay until he runs out of the foyer.  CUT TO:  Shueller at the monastery entrance running to the stairs and brushing aside several people.  Conway turns and sees him coming then steps forward to intercept him, but Shueller stops and raises his revolver.

                                         CONWAY

Lt. Shueller, you would be doing me a great service if you could put down your weapon and tell me what this urgency is all about?

                                         SHUELLER

I’ll shoot anyone that stands in my way!

Kleinschmit comes up from behind in an attempt to subdue him but Shueller turns, fires once and drops Kleinschmit in front of Bryant and Vivian.  Chang steps in front of Conway and Sondra.  Bryant and Vivian bend down to assist Kleinschmit, the other soldiers back away.  Bogart and Gable come out to the entrance and witness Shueller taking off again until he meets Alex and Quie but he quickly sidesteps them and runs up the ascent.  Indy and Shorty are nowhere to be seen.  CUT TO:  Indy and Shorty at the crag, Indy has dynamite with blasting caps attached and he is climbing the outer rim of The Crest, stringing cable behind him.  He places the explosives behind a large boulder that juts out at the heart of The Crest.  He hurries back down to where Shorty is waiting with the detonator.

                                         INDIANA JONES

This should bring the entire mountainside down!

Both men crouch down as Indy drives the plunger home, but nothing happens.  Indy looks up at The Crest.

                                         INDIANA JONES

The contacts must be corroded.

Indy drives the plunger home again and again, but still nothing happens.  He checks the connections and sees a spark being produced by the detonator.

                                         SHORT ROUND

Maybe there’s a break in the cable, Dr. Jones!  I’ll go check it!

                                         INDIANA JONES

No!  I’ll go!  Just watch for my signal.  Then count to a hundred and push the plunger down.

                                         SHORT ROUND

But what about you, Dr. Jones?

                                         INDIANA JONES

Shorty, count to 100…

                                         SHORT ROUND

1, 2, 5, 10, 25, 30…

                                         INDIANA JONES

No!  Shorty, 1, 2, 3, 4… like that!  Got it?

                                         SHORT ROUND

Okay!  Got it, Dr. Jones!  Like hide ‘n’ seek!

                                         INDIANA JONES

Wait for my signal! (then under his breath)  olley olley outs and free!

Indy begins examining the cable and retraces his steps back up the ridge.  As Shorty watches him climb higher, Shueller appears with his revolver drawn and pointed at Shorty.

                                         SHUELLER

Get back!  (Shorty steps back with hands raised)  Where’s Dr. Jones?

CUT TO:  Indy in the midst of his climbing, checking the cable periodically for breaks.  CUT TO:  The crag’s entrance to Shangri La.  Shueller sees the detonator, picks it up and rips the wires out of it then hurls it into the crevasse below.  Shueller follows the cable up the ridge with his eyes then smiles.  He turns and strikes Shorty with the butt of his revolver, rendering Shorty unconscious.  Then Shueller begins climbing after Indy.  CUT TO: Indy reaching the place were the dynamite has been placed.  He finds it frayed at the point of attachment and then remakes the cable’s connection. He moves towards the outer rim to look down at the crag’s entrance but does not see Shorty.  CUT TO:  Shueller cautiously making the climb up to intercept Indy.  CUT TO:  Indy making the descent back down and meeting Shueller about halfway.  Shueller raises his revolver and fires at Indy, missing him.  Indy ducks down behind the drifts of snow and rock.  CUT TO:  The lower plateau on the opposite side of the crag’s entrance.  Professor Stromberg and Captain Von Haus along with his soldiers are encamped there  They react to the echo of the shot fire by Shueller.  Von Haus orders sharpshooters position themselves while Stromberg scans the upper ridge behind The Crest with field glasses.  CUT TO:  Shorty lying unconscious on the ground.  A shadow crosses over his face.  CUT TO:  Shueller advancing up the ridge, revolver raised.  Indy is retreating back up to the top.  Shueller calls out to him.

                                         SHUELLER

Dr. Jones, I have destroyed your detonator! Your attempt to conceal the entrance to Shangri La has failed!

CUT TO:  Indy’s reaction to Shueller’s taunting.  He continues backing up the ridge.

                                         SHUELLER

I’m afraid that Shangri La is about to meet it’s new High Lama, the pride of Germany!

                                         INDIANA JONES

What did you do to Shorty?  If you have harmed him…

                                         SHUELLER

Do not worry about your little friend!  He will soon be the happy subject of the Third Reich!

                                         INDIANA JONES

You can’t win!  Germany has all ready been defeated!  Your “High Lama” Adolf just doesn’t know when he’s licked!

                                         SHUELLER

Mere circumstance, Dr. Jones.  Shangri La will preserve his legacy, his dream of a greater Reich the world has never known!  I will see to it personally!  I will be in that parade after all, Dr. Jones!

                                         INDIANA JONES

That dream of a better world is here, can’t you see that?  Neither Hitler nor anyone else can improve upon it.  You had to feel it, Shueller… you have to know it is true!

Shueller continues to jockey for position up the ridge as Indy backs up towards the summit where the dynamite has been placed.  CUT TO:  Shorty unconscious on the ground.  A man’s hands check to see if Shorty is still breathing.  The hands lift Shorty to a sitting position and leans him up against the crag’s entrance.  CUT TO:  The Germans at the plateau, searching the ridge with their field glasses and spotting Indy at an opening in The Crest.  Von Haus directs his sharpshooters to open fire.  CUT TO:  Indy ducking down as bullets whiz past.  CUT TO:  Shueller advancing up and also looking down at where the shots are being fired from.  CUT TO:  Another set of feet advancing up the ridge, stumbling, regaining control and continually climbing up.  CUT TO:  Shorty coming around, regaining consciousness.  CUT TO:  Indy reaching the point in the ridge near the center of The Crest and the jutting boulder where he has placed the dynamite.  Indy looks back from where he came then looks to the other side of the ridge towards the plateau.  He makes his way past the boulder and looks for an exit on the other side.  There is a sheer slope resembling the side of a glacier several hundred feet long that swirls around past the back side of the plateau.  Indy shudders and retreats back.  CUT TO:  Shueller reaching the peak of the summit, looking for Indy and searching the ground, finally seeing the dynamite.

                                         SHUELLER

It’s no use, Dr. Jones!  I have beaten you!

Indy steps out in full view of Shueller, hands raised.

                                         INDIANA JONES

It’s not too late, Shueller.  A better world for both of us without prejudice lies just inside that entrance.  You and I have seen it, it isn’t just a dream.  We’ve seen it in action, we know it’s real.  A better future for mankind is here!  Mankind’s fate lies in our hands!

                                         SHUELLER

Merely pawns, Dr. Jones.  Contentment for the weak minded and faint of heart.  I’m afraid that does not appeal to me.  (He raises his gun and takes aim)  Over your dead body?  All right.  Goodbye, Dr. Jones.

In that moment from the boulder over head the sled dog appears and growls.  Shueller turns and fires as the dog leaps at him.  The bullet enters the dog’s shoulder and the momentum of his leap carries him over the opposite edge to the pathway below.  Indy seizes the opportunity and lunges at Shueller.  They begin to wrestle for the gun, Indy strikes Shueller’s wrist and knocks the gun away.  CUT TO:  The dog lying on the pathway below bleeding and hurt badly.  A pair of feet appear and then hands reach out and pick up the dog.  CUT TO:  Shorty still at the entrance, watching for signs of  Indy.  The camera shows the back of the man carrying the sled dog down the pathway towards Shorty.  CUT TO:  Shorty accepting the dog from his rescuer and smiling gratefully to him, still unseen from the camera.  CUT TO:  Indy and Shueller still fighting.  Indy is knocked down by Shueller, who scrambles for the gun.  Indy leaps on top of him and they struggle again.  Shueller raises the weapon and strikes Indy on the head, knocking him down and dazing him.  He points the revolver at Indy and steps back.

                                         SHUELLER

So much for fate… no more intervention, no more hope.  The prize is won!  You lose, Dr. Jones!

Indy looks up and sees Kleinschmit coming up behind Shueller.  He is stumbling and weak from his wound.  Indy groggily looks at Shueller.

                                         INDIANA JONES

Maybe… we both do.

Shueller looks momentarily puzzled and that is just enough time for Kleinschmit to tackle Shueller and wrestle him to the ground.  The revolver is once again thrown clear.  CUT TO:  Shorty holding the dog in his arms.  Shorty looks up at the ridge.

                                         SHORT ROUND (calling out)

Indy!  Are you all right?  Indy!

CUT TO:  Stromberg with his field glasses zeroing in on the echo of Shorty’s calling out and finds the crag’s entrance.

                                         STROMBERG

Captain!  There it is!

Captain Von Haus trains his eyes to where Stromberg is pointing, then orders his men to advance down the steep trail leading through the chasm.  The sharpshooters fire upon Shorty who ducks down as bullets whiz past.  The remaining German patrol leaves the plateau and makes for the crag.  CUT TO:  Kleinschmit over powering Shueller to the point of exhaustion.  Kleinschmit grabs the revolver and crawls to where the dynamite has been placed.  He points the revolver point blank at the explosives, turns to look at Indy and smiles.

                                         INDIANA JONES

No, Kleinschmit… we’ll use the detonator.

                                         KLEINSCHMIT

There is no time, save yourself and the valley.

Shueller begins to stir and sees Kleinschmit’s intentions.

                                         SHUELLER

Kleinschmit!  Don’t be a fool!  The valley can heal you!

                                         KLEINSCHMIT (turns to face Shueller)

It all ready has!  (turns back to Indy with a smile)  It all ready has!

Shueller rises to his feet cursing, Kleinschmit ignores him.

KLEINSCHMIT (whispering to Indy and nodding towards the crag’s entrance)

Go now, my friend!

                                         INDIANA JONES

You’re saving the dream of mankind…  and saving us from ourselves.

CUT TO:  Indy waves farewell to Kleinschmit while Shueller continues to argue and curse.  Indy reaches the pathway down, but a volley of bullets from the sharpshooters below sends him stumbling back.  He glances down and sees the German patrol inching their way through the chasm.  He races back across the summit past Shueller and Kleinschmit.

                                         INDIANA JONES

Do it, Kleinschmit… before it is too late!  They are coming up the chasm!  Shoot now!

Indy dashes across and plunges down the slope on the opposite side.  CUT TO:  Shueller’s face as he realizes Kleinschmit is about to fire into the dynamite.  He screams.  CUT TO:  Kleinschmit determinedly firing, causing an explosion that begins to crumble The Crest.  CUT TO:  The avalanche caused by the explosion causing the entire glacier to collapse.  CUT TO:  Indy sliding down the slope as over head The Crest begins to fall down around him.  CUT TO:  Shorty watching as the wall of The Crest begins to cave in.  CUT TO:  The avalanche caused by the explosion burying the Germans on the pathway and the sharpshooters on the plateau.  CUT TO:  Indy continuing to slide down, swirling and pitching with the rumble of the avalanche causing the earth to shake.  CUT TO:  Shorty witnessing the entire side of the ridge crashing down upon him, making any chance of leaving Shangri La impossible.  He backs into the crag carrying the dog just in time to avoid being buried.  CUT TO:  Indy making his way down and finally resting to a stop as the final stages of the avalanche settle into the chasm.  CUT TO:  Indy’s face, realizing he has succeeded in sealing off the entrance to Shangri La but placed himself on the opposite side.  CUT TO:  Tenzin and the porters approaching from behind Indy.

FADE

EXTERIOR.  THE SIDEWALK OF LONDON.  DAY.  1990’s.  Indy is gradually regaining consciousness.  There is a crowd of people gathered around him.  The three oriental men have crouched around him, one has been trying to revive him.

                                         STRAW HAT

Dr. Jones!  Indy!  Are you all right?

Indy opens his one good eye and looks at the man cradling Indy’s head in his hands.

                                         INDIANA JONES

Who the hell wants to know?

Straw Hat laughs, as does everyone else in the crowd.

                                        STRAW HAT

Don’t you recognize me, old friend?

Indy squints to get a better look.

                                         INDIANA JONES

Hell no!

                                         STRAW HAT

We shared many adventures, you and I!

Indy gives another look, then his eye widens with astonishment and disbelief.

                                         INDIANA JONES

Short Round!  What are you… how did you…?

                                         SHORT ROUND

Shhh… yes!  it’s me!

                                         INDIANA JONES

But I… we destroyed the only entrance…

                                         SHORT ROUND

Only KNOWN entrance, Dr. Jones.  Mr. Bryant… he discovered another one.  Only took him 40 years to dream up another project.

The crowd begins to disperse as Indy is helped to a semi-sitting position.

                                         INDIANA JONES

What project?

                                         SHORT ROUND

A starting point for bungee jumping!  Ha ha!  Life is good in Shangri La, Dr. Jones!

All three of the Orientals begin to laugh and Indy sees that it is Bogart and Gable that has accompanied Shorty.

                                         INDIANA JONES

But… why are you here?  You’ve grown old out here…

                                         SHORT ROUND

We’ve grown old looking for you, my friend.  Old and tired, too!  After we found the second entrance the porters told us that you had survived the avalanche.  Now we’ve found you and we’re going to take you back!

Indy shakes his head.  Wearily he leans back on Shorty while wiping his brow with a handkerchief.

                                         INDIANA JONES

I can’t make it, Shorty.  You’re too late to save me, get back there before it is too late for you.

                                         SHORT ROUND

It’s not too late, Dr. Jones!  Conway says where there is life there is hope!  You are still alive, we still have hope!

                                         INDIANA JONES

No, Shorty… it is my time.  Tell Angela… tell Angela that I love her.  Tell her that I have always loved her.

Indy begins to fade away in Shorty’s arms.  He reaches up to touch Shorty’s face, but his hand drops heavily… lifeless.

                                         SHORT ROUND

Indy!

Shorty shakes Indy trying to revive him.

                                         SHORT ROUND

Indy wait!  Angela needs you!  She sent us to get you!  Don’t go, Indy!  Wake up!

Indy stirs and opens his eye.  Quickly Shorty instructs one of his cousins to open a box he has been carrying.  Inside there are some Parasol flowers in a pot.  Shorty brings them up out of the box.

                                         SHORT ROUND

Indy, look!  Angela asked me to bring these to you!

Indy reaches out to the flowers.  He puts his finger in one of the flowers and wiggles it.

                                         INDIANA JONES (whispers)

Chinamen’s hats… ah so!

Shorty places them below Indy’s face.

                                         SHORT ROUND

Smell them, Indy… smell the flowers that Angela has sent you!

Indy takes a slight whiff and instantly, but only momentarily… his age drops in half.  Indy’s eye widens as he discovers renewed vigor with that effort..  Shorty raises the flowers to his own face  and breathes in deeply.  Indy catches his breath when he sees Shorty shed 30 years in an instant.

                                         SHORT ROUND

Touch the soil, Dr. Jones!

Indy reaches into the pot, pinches a bit of soil between his fingers and returns to a healthy 40 year old in a heart beat.  He raises his hand, pulls up his eye patch and grins.  The cousins help him to his feet and the four men greet each other warmly.  Indy takes a small portion of earth from the pot and closes his palm around it.

                                         INDIANA JONES

Well… what are we waiting for?

FADE

EXTERIOR.  THE PROMENADE TO SHANGRI LA.  DAY.  Angela runs up to Indy and falls into his arms.  The others are coming up from behind to welcome him back.  Angela and Indy kiss.

                                         CONWAY

Welcome back, Indy!  (he pats him on the back and they shake hands)  Glad you could rejoin us!

The others clamor around as well, hugging Indy and shaking his hand.  The sled dog is barking excitedly.  Indy bends down to pet him.

                                         INDIANA JONES

Hello, old friend.

You gone and done it. I had absolutely no desire to see the new Indy flick until I started reading this. I read here and there and then more and more and more. You did something the trailers couldn’t, you hooked me in.

It’s understandable the studio wasn’t gonna bite on your take; it’s their puppy after all. But this was really good stuff. I just wish it wasn’t over.

    Well done sir. As always.

  2. chrisfiore5 Says:

    hello marc,

hey guy… thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment, I really do appreciate it.

writing this screenplay was great fun for me because with the character of Indiana Jones you could just envision Harrison Ford throughout the story.

I’m glad you enjoyed it and look forward to hearing from you again soon.

Now let’s see how their story compares to mine! (I’m sure it will be dazzling and I am really looking forward to it) Maybe we can talk again after we’ve both seen it.

    peace.

  3. marc Says:

    Sounds like a plan.

    all the best to you

  4. chirchi965 Says:

Well done, I absolutely love it!! ( not an indiana jones fan though) hehehe
The reason why i got hooked mainly bcoz you got good story telling style and also that it shared some similarity to a book written by James Redfield ” The Secret of Shambhala: In Search of the Eleventh Insight “, more towards the spiritual side though. Maybe u should try and read it :D.

    take care
