Indiana Jones and the Dance of Aldebaran, Part 3

INTERIOR.  THE TEMPLE FOYER.  DAY.  Conway and Chang lead their guests inside and begin directing servants to accompany each one to his individual room.  Indy pauses with Angela a bit awkwardly.

                                         INDIANA JONES

Er… Chang, Angela and I was expecting to find Alex here…

                                         CHANG

Oh yes.  He would be in the valley conducting class for the children of the village.  But he will return in time for lunch, you can meet him then… if you like.

                                         CONWAY

Alexander and Mrs. Lovett will be thrilled upon hearing of your arrival.  Your hosts have been very anxious to see you, Indy.

Indy and Angela look at each other.

                                         ANGELA

Mrs. Lovett?

CUT TO:  Shueller and his men being assigned individual rooms.  Shueller enters and quickly surveys his accommodations, going to the window and throwing open the shutters, noticing there are no bars.  The view over the valley is a sharp drop of over a thousand feet.  He studies the village below.  Then Shueller reaches inside his coat and pulls out a revolver.  Hesitating for a moment, he walks over to the bed and sticks it under the pillow.  He then begins to undress.  CUT TO:  Shorty and his cousins passing by a banquet hall and noticing several attractive young women arranging place settings.  They smile at Shorty and his cousins, who then reciprocate.  Passing on a few feet they begin whooping it up until they reach their rooms.

                                         SHORT ROUND (imitating Chang)

Welcome to Shangri La… ooo la la LA!

They all laugh.

FADE

INTERIOR.  INDY’S ROOM.  DAY.  Indy does a slight inventory of his room, admiring artwork, the furniture and pottery.  He walks to a large, bay window and looks out at the lush gardens, then beyond to the snow capped mountains that surround the valley.  He walks to the desk and thumbs through a book, then begins to disrobe.  Outside his room he hears faint footsteps growing louder as they approach his door.  There is a rapid knocking and then a man bursts in.  Indy looks up, startled.  It is his old friend, ALEX.

                                         INDIANA JONES

Alex?  Alex!

                                          ALEX

Henry!  It is you!

Alex strides in and gives Indy a hearty handshake and pat on the back.  Indy follows suit then pulls back to look him over, both men are all smiles.

                                         INDIANA JONES

Alex, you haven’t changed a bit!

Alex beams a little sheepishly.

                                         INDIANA JONES

No, I mean it.  Alex… you haven’t changed a bit!  How is that possible?

                                         ALEX

Haven’t I?  C’mon man, it’s been over a dozen years, everyone changes.

                                         INDIANA JONES

Everyone but you!  Al, what’s going on here?  I mean, pinch me ’cause I must be dreamin’.  Where the hell am I?

                                         ALEX

You mean where the hell aren’t you!  Come now, Henry, you didn’t travel half way around the world to discuss my appearance and such.  How are you?  What’s new at the University and the big, bold, beautiful world?

Indy motions for Alex to sit down and both men find chairs near the bay window.

                                         INDIANA JONES

Well, you know… of course, that there’s a war going on?

                                         ALEX

There is?  Against whom, who started it and what for?

Indy begins to feel uncomfortable and begins searching for a way to begin until Alex bursts into laughter.

                                         ALEX

Cri-men-netly, Henry… we ain’t completely in the dark in these here parts, ya know!

Indy laughs nervously.  Alex reaches out and puts a hand on his shoulder.

                                         ALEX

It is going to be great having you here… like old times!

                                         INDIANA JONES

More than you realize.

                                         ALEX

How do you mean, my good man?

Indy takes a deep breath.  Alex removes his hand and sits back in his chair.

                                         INDIANA JONES

Al, … Angela is with me.

Alex sits up, surprised… and then sits back, relaxed and begins to chuckle.

                                         ALEX

Oh, you nearly had me there, old chum!  Yessir, nearly had me good!

                                         INDIANA JONES

Alex, I’m not joking… Angela is here… with me.

Alex sits back in a slump, his face full of wonder.

                                         ALEX

You don’t say, really?  Oh, well!  Nothings changed with you, I can see.  The minute I turn my back, there you are… making a move on my girl!  Some friend you turned out to be!

                                         INDIANA JONES

Alex!  It’s been 12 years!  We thought… we thought you were… well, dead!  No one’s heard from you and then, poof! out of the blue… “Having a lovely time… wish you were here!”

                                         ALEX

Oh yes, that.  You got that, right?  Right!  Otherwise you wouldn’t be here.  Ha ha!  She’s here?  Oh Henry, you sure got me there.  It’s going to be like old times!

                                         INDIANA JONES

Alex, you must understand.  It wasn’t like that, it was never like that.  Angela took her betrothal to you very seriously.  For years she held on to the hope that you’d come back.

                                         ALEX

And you two accidentally came together on this trip and the rest is history?

                                         INDIANA JONES

Bringing her was Dad’s idea.

                                          ALEX

Henry, Sr.?  How is the old man?  Still searching for the grail?

                                         INDIANA JONES

Found the grail, now he’s president of the University.

Alex’s mouth drops.

                                         ALEX

I don’t know which sounds more preposterous!

                                         INDIANA JONES

Believe me, Al… it’s all true.

                                         ALEX

I have been away too long!

Indy leans forward on his chair closer to Alex and lowers his tone.

                                         INDIANA JONES

You mean, you’re ready to come back?

Alex throws his head back and lets out a hearty laugh.

                                         ALEX

Oh good heavens no!  Henry, that is just a figure of speech!  I’m perfectly content here… have a wife, you know.

                                         INDIANA JONES

So I heard.  Now who had their back turned?

Both men begin laughing and Alex slaps his knee.

                                         ALEX

Good one, Henry!  You are sharp as a tack, my friend.  How I’ve missed you and these little banters!

                                         INDIANA JONES (seriously)

So tell me about your wife and your time here.  12 years, Al… long time no hear from.  What happened?  Why did it take you so long to get in touch with us?  and what about Angela?

Alex slaps his knee again and stands up, walking over to the window and looking up at the mountain peaks.  His mood turns somber.

                                         ALEX

You always were one who didn’t beat around the bush, Henry.

                                         INDIANA JONES

… and you were always the one that set fire to it!

Alex chuckles, then leans on the window ledge and faces Indy.

                                         ALEX

We were kidnapped, really.  Conway and myself, a few others.  Held against our will at first.  Guests of Chang, it was said.

                                         INDIANA JONES

I’m not quite sure of all his guests, but go on.

                                         ALEX

Well, this placed changed us… it will change you, if you’ll let it.  Not brainwashed, mind you.  But, well… reborn, sort of like a renewed sense of purpose.  Like a caretaker relationship with the Earth and all it’s creation.  The outside world just grew less and less important, and with that… any desire I’ve had to leave here.  Later on… I met my wife, she’s a native of the valley.  The years, Indy, literally flew by.  We hear news of the world; reports of wars and such, but time stands still in Shangri La.  I’ve never known such harmony.

                                         INDIANA JONES

Why, then… am I here?

FADE

EXTERIOR.  THE MONASTERY ENTRANCE.  DAY.  Conway is standing at the top of the staircase looking out at the promenade’s hanging gardens and main fountain.  Chang comes out from inside and joins him.

                                         CONWAY

How many souls today, Chang, ten?

                                         CHANG

Yes, Mr. Conway… and the dog, of course.

                                         CONWAY

Ah yes!  (he laughs) We mustn’t forget him!  Man’s best friend!  (he returns to being solemn)  We haven’t seen that many all at once since…

                                         CHANG

Since your arrival, Mr. Conway.

Conway smiles and nods in agreement.

                                         CONWAY

All bedded down, right?  Room enough for everyone, I presume?

                                         CHANG

This monastery contains 29 individual rooms for guests, Mr. Conway, more than adequate accommodations, I might add.

                                         CONWAY

Oh yes, quite.  Thank you, Chang.

                                         CHANG

Will the High Lama be making arrangements to interview the new arrivals soon, Mr. Conway?

Conway turns to Chang, places a hand on his shoulder and smiles.

                                         CONWAY

We’ll allow Shangri La’s ambiances to soften their hearts a little while first.

Chang bows and exits.  Conway turns to look out at the grand spectacle of the mountains surrounding him.

                                         CONWAY

Could anything touch a man’s heart more convincingly?

FADE

INTERIOR.  A LARGE STEAM BATH.  DAY.  Angela enters attended to by two young women.  She steps into the pool and relaxes on one side.  After a few moments, Shueller, Kleinschmit and the rest of the German men enter and step inside the pool at the opposite side.  Kleinschmit is nearest to Shueller and he looks over at Angela.  Shueller speaks incoherently and the others laugh, but Kleinschmit remains silent.  Angela nervously gathers up the courage to get up and exit the pool as Kleinschmit is watching her every move.  She hears the laughter of the men as she hurries away.  CUT TO:  Angela’s room, she enters from the steam bath.  Closing the door, she props herself behind it and breathes a sigh of relief.  Looking over towards her bed, there is a note left there.  She walks over, picks it up and begins to read:  “I’LL BE IN THE GARDEN BY SIX.  INDY.”  A slow smile crosses her face as she holds the note to her breast.

FADE

INTERIOR.  THE MAIN CORRIDOR.  DAY.  Angela leaves her room and makes for the Foyer when Alex steps out of a nearby doorway.  She stops and catches her breath.

                                         ANGELA

Alex!

ALEX (rushing up and taking her by the hands)

Angela!  How wonderful to see you!  (they embrace)

                                         ANGELA

Oh Alex, how have you been?  This is incredible!  This whole place is so incredible and you…

                                         ALEX

… look incredible, too?  (they laugh)  Angela, you are absolutely radiant.  (they embrace again)

                                         ANGELA

You must tell me everything!  What happened to you and how did you come to be here?

                                         ALEX

Oh not now, darling… just let me look at you!

Angela’s mood shifts slightly.

                                         ANGELA

Alex, it has been so long… and Henry and I… well…

                                         ALEX

Angela, I know all about it!  It’s wonderful!  You and Henry after all this time!

                                         ANGELA

And you, I understand you’ve married?

                                         ALEX

Yes, to a lovely native girl… you’ll adore her.  I’ll introduce you tonight at dinner.

                                         ANGELA

Alex, walk with me to the gardens, we’ll talk…

                                         ALEX

… and talk and talk and talk some more!  I’d be delighted!

They exit and FADE

EXTERIOR.  THE HANGING GARDENS NEAR THE PROMENADE.  DAY.  Indy is sitting on a stone bench as Angela appears.  He rises up to meet her, they kiss and embrace.  Hand in hand they walk the garden area, taking in the wild life and scenery.  Rounding a corner they happen upon Bryant and Vivian relaxing under a shade tree.  They turn to see Angela and Indy, then rise to their feet to greet them.

                                         ANGELA

Oh please, don’t get up.  We didn’t mean to disturb you.

                                         INDIANA JONES

Yes, excuse us.  We are just sort of wandering around…

They both smile.

                                         BRYANT

Easy enough to do, grand place to get lost in.  Welcome to Shangri La.

                                         INDIANA JONES

We are delighted to be here.

                                         BRYANT

Please join us, won’t you?

                                         ANGELA

We don’t want to intrude…

                                          VIVIAN

We’ll have none of that, join in with us.  We’ll attend dinner together.

They all sit below the tree.  Angela admires the landscape.

                                         INDIANA JONES

I couldn’t have imagined it more beautiful.

                                         BRYANT

Precisely how we felt, eh Viv?

                                         VIVIAN

It never ceases to amaze me, I discover more each time I walk in the gardens.

                                         ANGELA

How long have you been here in Shangri La?

Bryant looks at Vivian.

                                         BRYANT

What say you , Viv… about 12 years or so?

                                         INDIANA JONES

Then you arrived about the time Conway and Alex did?

                                         BRYANT

Came in with them.  Our plane crashed into a mountain and we were rescued together.

                                         ANGELA

It must have been terrible!

                                         VIVIAN

Not really, wouldn’t have met Bryant if not for that trip.

                                         BRYANT

And that put me about a million miles from my former self, let me tell you.

                                         INDIANA JONES

What were you before?

                                         BRYANT

Ever hear of Chalmers Bryant before the stock market crash in ’29?  I’m him, dear and glorious plumber… that was me!  That was another crash I was able to walk away from!  Only cost me everything.  (hugs Vivian)  Worth every penny, though… eh, Viv?  (they laugh)

                                         ANGELA

So you actually didn’t meet until you arrived here?

                                         VIVIAN

Didn’t like him at first, but he grows on you!

                                         BRYANT

Blame it on the climate, me love.

                                         INDIANA JONES

Hold on a minute!  Chalmers Bryant came on the market about 30 years ago during the First World War… you must have started out very young!

Just then a gong is heard.  Bryant and Vivian begin to get up with Indy and Angela following.

                                         BRYANT

Saved by the bell!  One thing they like you to be is prompt about here and that’s chow time.  Kinda like the Army in that respect.

Bryant puts his arm around Vivian and they stroll back towards the monastery with Indy and Angela behind them.  Indy is scratching his head and shrugging his shoulders while Angela hushes him.
